Letter in a Raft…er

Image

Dear Carpenter,

While looking at this completed patio roof, we thought of you fixing it.  Thank you for catching it in time before the rot got too far, and preserving the piece.

Please keep in mind that the artists who built this home were make do people, and that this adaptation to their creation; was our best attempt at harmonizing with how it was built(with art).

If you find yourself doubting our skills and tradecraft, realize it was good enough at the time, and that the location of this letter was determined; by the spot we liked least on the project.

When and if you begin to cuss us for our angles and complicated frame-work, please recognize that the customer loved that it looked like a spider web. We scratched our way through a morning of figuring out how to build it, because she wanted it that way.

Additionally, if you’re wondering why the thing wasn’t painted, you can thank the customer for that.  She was smart enough to invest in cedar wood, and didn’t want to maintain paint. Know that your efforts are greatly appreciated by us, as this customer is one of our favorites.

Sincerely,

Your Job Security Team 50 Years Ago

P.S.  Is there a large stone as the first step, at the bottom of the staircase?  Cool.  Maybe you should try playing with rocks too.  Thanks for your patience with the nails, we have an ongoing love affair with fasteners.
